Tales of an Adventurer

It’s Raining in Africa!

After two day, I was sleeping and started to hear the rain falling. African rain comes in big proportions and not very often! Normally it only rains during Summer or the raining season in Africa. So we were in the middle of the dry season so it was kind of odd to be raining.

The rain fell during the night and didn’t stop in the morning. I woke up and went to the breakfast area where everyone was already there drinking the morning coffee.

– Morning everyone – “John” said – it is raining like crazy and doesn’t show signs of stopping. So maybe we will sleep in the morning. Relax and rest, then in the afternoon we will give it a go.

It was a good plan. It was pouring rain and our car didn’t have a roof. So it was the logical solution. I returned to my tent, got back in my pyjamas and tried to sleep. Of course I couldn’t sleep, I was already awake. So I decided to study in my tent.

Two hours later I decided to go and be social. We were studying in the classroom when “John” suggested that we watch a movie if the rain doesn’t stop in the afternoon. We agreed. Also we decided to do the lecture in the morning and spend more time in the afternoon drive.

After lunch the rain was still going. We all looked at each other and said:

– Are we afraid of water? – I said – I think we should give it a chance!

– I agree – “John” said – if you don’t have rain coats we will improvise.

“John” went to the kitchen and grabbed the garbage bags.

– We can make three holes in them and we make a jacket – he said.

– That is brilliant! I’m in! – I said.

Each person created their new Louis Vitton “black edition’ jacket! We decided to take a nice picture so we could have proof of it. No one would believe we decided to use garbage bags as jackets. We felt like we were McGyvers!

We jumped into the car, pouring rain and off we went. We were pumped, ready to take the world!

The whole group is ready

After the first 5 minutes we realised how fools we were. With the rain dropping like crazy and the speed of the car, there was no way to keep my eyes open! So I started to look down so I could keep my eyes open.

– Can’t see anything! – I said to myself. I turned to one side and managed to keep one eye open – It’s better than to look at nothing! – I thought.

I wanted to know how much rain was raining. So my brilliant mind thought that maybe I should use my garbage “jacket” to create a tiny pool so I could measure it. Like when you are trying to carry apples with your clothes, What could go wrong?

After 45 miserable minutes we gave up. No one could see anything! We were soaking wet at the moment. It was no use!

When we arrived at the garage I realised the mistake I have made. My “little” pool had reached proportions that I did not wish.

– Now how do I get out of the car without wetting myself? – I asked for advice from the adults.

They all laughed and left me to save myself.

– Great role models – I said to myself.

I tried to get up but some water quickly fell to the side and made its way to my bottom.

– Ahhh! – I screamed.

I had the idea maybe I could try to throw the water to one side of the car. I tried to get up. Part of the water went straight to my socks! I sat again.

– This is not working! – I said to myself – I need momentum!

I decided to get up very quickly. The speed and trajectory would send the water far from me! I get myself ready! Then the moment I try to get up quickly, my shoe slips from the water that was in the car making me lose balance. Fearing that I was going to fall, my right arm let go of the garbage bag and grabbed the side of the car. The water fell over my legs and over my already wet socks!

Disappointed, I sat down because I was soaking wet. When I sat I jumped straight up because now there was a pool in my seat. As I got up I hit my head straight on the roof of the garage!

Soaking wet and now with a massive bump on my head, I finally got out of the car and made my way to the tent. I grabbed my towel to go and have a shower. Now remember, there is no bathroom on my tent so I had to cross camp to get to the showers.

When I reached the showers my towel was soaking wet, with cold water!

– I hate rain! – I said – And I’m pretty sure it hates me too!

After getting a hot shower and drying myself with a wet towel, I went to rest at my tent. It was decided that after dinner we would watch a movie, “Jock of the Bushveld”. What an amazing film it was. I do recommend it!

I went to bed hoping the rain would stop the next morning. Today was an adventure, and I hope tomorrow it will be too.
